Story: The School, by Donald Barthelme (I read it at

Comments: This is another very shortie but really, really, really, goodie.  You can read this in a few minutes – but you’ll be thinking about it for days afterwards.  It is gloriously under-stated, and very powerful in impact.  I’ll be on the lookout for more by this author.

  1. I just listened to The School and another Barthelme story on the New Yorker Fiction podcast. It’s certainly an interesting one. I also really like his “I Bought a Little City” (also on The New Yorker podcast)

  3. Candiss’s luck of draw picked this story this week for her also. Clearly this should be interpreted as a sign that I should read it immediately, which I’m gong off to do now. 🙂

  4. Wow, what a cool bit of serendipity! I can’t believe we both drew the same story…and such a neat little gem, too!

I’ve taken to waiting until Jay’s Sunday wrap-ups to visit the other blogs to see what they’ve drawn for the week, since he collects us all neatly in one place. I feel like I’m less likely to miss someone’s post that way. I like that it can also lead to this sort of interesting surprise. 🙂

I’m glad you enjoyed the story, too. I keep finding myself thinking about it and really must read more Barthelme soon.
